Tithing and Offerings

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 "Remember this--a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. "For God loves a person who gives cheerfully." And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to start with others"

Are you struggling with giving your tithes and offerings? Is this something you've heard the pastors ask for at church, but never really understood why it was required and what it was for? I understand, and I hope to provide you with some clarity on why we tithe as believers and how it can drastically change your life.

In Malachi 3:10, the Lord commands the people to "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple."

According to Deuteronomy 14:22-23, your tithe is ten percent of your income. The scriptures read:

"You must set aside a tithe of your crops--one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year. Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship--the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored--and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and heeds. Doing this will teach you always to fear the Lord your God."

This scripture tells us to bring the ten percent of our income into the designated place of worship, or the church. This is typically the church you have membership or are attending. If you are not a member, but would like to give your tithes, seek the Lord on where He would like you to bring them. The scripture above mentions that place as the "place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored." If He chose it for you, He will certainly guide you there.

An offering is a free will gift, given at your discretion on top of your ten percent tithe, usually as a gift to a church and/or man or woman of God. A passage of scripture that explains this is Romans 15:26-27. "For you see, the believers in Macedonia and Achaia have eagerly taken up an offering for the poor among the believers in Jerusalem. They were glad to do this because they feel they owe a real debt to them. Since the Gentiles received the spiritual blessings of the Good News from the believers in Jerusalem, they feel the least they can do in return is to help them financially."

Simply put, we follow this practice of giving our tithes and offerings because the Lord commanded us to do so. However, there are always heaping benefits from obeying the law of the Lord. This is also the same for paying your tithes and offerings.

Before we jump into the benefits, however, I feel that we must acknowledge that this practice in particular is a real struggle for Christians all over the world. Why? Well, there are some known reasons. One of those factors is trust. Believers don't always trust that the funds are being used properly, so in turn, they withheld.

I understand, but would like to offer you a different perspective. If God commanded it--do it. If someone is mishandling funds, trust that God sees all and will take care of it in his timing, his way. Then, you're in alignment with the Lord, and your out of their business and all is good, right?

I believe another reason we struggle with paying tithes and offerings is due to a 'lack mentality.' When our check, which is $1000 for example, is already going to bills with barely any left over, how could we possibly pay $100 (one-tenth) that we don't have to the church??

When we have this mindset, there's a few scriptures to remember:

  1. Psalm 23 NIV - "The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing."

Remember, because the Lord is your Shepherd, and you are His sheep, and He leads you, guides you and takes care of you like a good Shepherd does, you have no lack.

2. Philippians 4:19 NLT - "And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus."

3. 2 Corinthians 9:9-11 NLT - "As the Scriptures say: "They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their deeds will be remembered forever." For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous."

So you mean that when you give, God increases my resources so I can give more?? YES!! If you don't have, give. Sincere giving creates a cycle of abundance in your life.

Benefits:

There are several benefits to tithes and offerings.

  1. The blessings of God - Tithing is a commandment. Whenever we obey the commandments of God, we receive the blessings of God.

Deuteronomy 28:2-8 reads,
"You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God: Your towns and your fields will be blessed. Your children and your crops will be blessed. The offspring of your herds and flocks will be blessed. Your fruit baskets and breadboards will be blessed. Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed. The Lord will conquer your enemies when they attack you. They will attack you from one direction, but they will scatter from you in seven! The Lord will guarantee a blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses with grain. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

When we obey the Word of God, we receive the blessings of God.

2. You are a blessing to God's church and to others

2 Corinthians 9:11-12 continues, "..And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. So two good things will result from this ministry of giving--the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God."

3. God responds

Malachi 3:10-11 tells us "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do, says the Lord of Heaven's Armies, "I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe," says the Lord of Heaven's armies."

Lastly, I want to leave you with 2 Corinthians 9:5-8.

So I thought I should send these brothers ahead of me to make sure the gift you promised is ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly. Remember this--a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. "For God loves a person who gives cheerfully." And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
